I really enjoyed this, up until the last big twist of the book. It was a fun mystery to see who did it, who might have been involved and how we got from 11 years ago to present
I feel like the big twist was a bit out of left field…I don’t want to say too much because spoilers, but it literally could have been anyone else and I feel it wouldn’t have made me this upset…
Maybe that was the point? I’m not sure…besides that, I’d recommend it but man that ending hurt. And not in the pulling heartstrings way, more in the “really…” kind of way
As an afterword, I agree with someone else's review: that twist really didn’t help the plot and was a hot tangled mess
This is the second Mark of the Least book that I’ve read. This one is a very fun retelling of Cinderella
I really enjoyed the jump between Cindy’s POV and Nik’s POV. There were some somewhat slow parts but I feel like once the action picked up it just didn’t really stop - which was nice. The characters were fun, and I was cheering for them as the story went on
On a personal side, I really need to read a book that doesn’t have a narcissistic Mother Gothel type character…this and the last book I’ve finished had a Mother Gothel and I think I need a different archetype of a villain…
Another book that took me a while to read, only this time because I don’t do “spicy” very well and I desperately needed to spread this out (even if spreading this out was reading it in two sittings because I didn’t want to stop)
Just like Neon Gods, this really starts off quick and just picks up as the story goes on. Eros was so adorable when he was flustered and it was great to see how his and Psyche’s relationship evolved throughout the book
It really took me until the end to realize who Aphrodite reminded me of and I damn near threw my book because of how I should have realized it sooner - not mad about how she was written, because Mother knows best. God that line makes me shiver even now
If you liked Neon Gods, definitely pick up this next book
I read this book with a friend of mine and went into this hopeful since I’ve read The Watchers previously (and enjoyed it)
This book…its hard to explain. But to me, this felt like a mix of the book/movie The Ring and (while this book came out before) the ichio game The Man from the Window
It’s a quick read, but it’s not a super quick pace. And the payoff may not be fully worth it to some readers, but I’d recommend trying it out if you want another book after reading The Watchers
I really enjoyed this one. The beginning was a bit slow but still enjoyable. When the action picked up, it definitely picked up
The only real complaint I had was that there was quite a bit of…intense sexual interactions in some points of the book. Which normally wouldn’t be an issue, but I really just wanted to get back to the ghost stuff
If you like St James, would definitely recommend as an earlier book
Okay, so I started this in my “struggle to read” period, but then my brain kicked into the “I need to finish these” periods, and do I read the final half of this in one sitting
The humor was great and honestly, with when this came it, this is definitely a book that post pandemic needed. I love Kaiju and this definitely delivered.
I’m excited to read more from this author in the future
This took me far longer than I wanted to finish it because of the different things I was hyper focusing on and life made it hard to read. But onto the book itself.
I was smiling so much during even the first few pages of this book. The humor was spot on and if you’ve ever only see the movie (2005), it makes you appreciate the movie so much more
I’ll eventually keep going with the rest of the series, but for now I’m very happy I’ve finished the first book
Man I was not expecting this book to be as good as it was. The first half of the book is kind of slow, but the exposition is needed to understand everyone’s reasoning for things
As someone who has been through their own NDE, it was definitely an interesting take on things and I really enjoyed the semantics of how that causes events in this book
It really does feel like taking the what it means to be a hero or a villain and turning it on its head. Some characters you’ll love, others you’ll probably despise. The last 60 or so pages go by SO fast. I feel like this is a more enjoyable take on the idea from the movie Unbreakable
I’m adding two new major content warnings in the review because I was really NOT prepared for that heavy of a discussion/talk of it during the first half of the book
I honestly don’t have words for how I feel after finishing that. I feel I had way more questions than answers…the world building was brilliant in this and it was definitely bleak. But I wish I could know why some things were banned and how things were as related as they were
I guess it goes along with Marcos being so disconnected from everything around him
If you want a bleak book, and are curious about all the hype? Sure, go for it…but definitely not my favorite of the bleak horror
I’m morbidly a fan of true crime. I had heard good things about this book and found a copy at a local thrift store. I knew the premise, but didn’t know what this would entail and honestly it didn’t disappoint
Room is in the perspective of Jack, who has just turned 5 and his whole life has only known Room. The first third of the book takes place in Room and their daily life. The rest of the book involves Ma and Jack learning about how to live in Outside after being in Room for so long.
Reading from the perspective of a five year old was so interesting and very well done. There were some points that I felt were a bit…older than he was supposed to be but I believe it was explained as a plot point that all he could do was learn and that’s why he’s able to think that way.
All in all, I think this was very good. Please read the content warnings prior to reading because it’s rough…I think some of the parts of the book I forgot to breathe because I was SO invested
