Wow.

So this was one of those books i was afraid to read. (Anxiety is a bitch, right?) Its one of those really popular and hyped up books, and you just feel some sort of pressure to love it. The last time i felt this was with ACOTAR, which i hated and ended up DNF'ing. I felt so bad that i hated a series that everyone seems to love lmao. (Eventually i stopped caring)

But then comes this trilogy, and here i was worried again. Thankfully I had to way a total of 20 weeks for this audiobook at my library, and in that time i put on my big girl pants and...

5⭐. Beautiful. I was on the edge of my seat almost the entire time, or kicking my feet/twirling my hair at how cute Kai and Pae were.

I will say i didn't enjoy how this story was almost a clone of the hunger games. I LOVE thg, but i found myself wanting this book to stand out more. Its not just that the overall theme was similar, but there are moments within the story that run almost identical. It wasn't annoying enough for me to take off stars, but i suppose it would make this a 4.75 for me.

The push and pully dynamic of Kai and Pae was so addicting. While on the other hand you have sweet sweet Mr Kitty himself also trying to get close to our lovely fmc. And THEN you have this incredible brotherly dynamic of Kitt and Kai being so bonded - you know its gonna hurt in the end when they fall in love with the same girl, but you look forward to it anyway. And then you have the tyrannical Father with unrealistic expectations that have the power to change everything in the worst way. Ugh.

The slow burn burnt me to a crisp. The tension was awesome. The magic system/class structure was also cool (though the names could use some workshopping). The trials had me on edge. Other than the clone like appearance of this plot to THG, this book was everything I could want. I was worried it was overhyped, but it was perfect.

I already own the novella and book 2... and im DYING to know what comes next. I've avoided spoilers so far which was hard because im obsessed with looking at fan art... but im gonna sit in this (annoying) cliffhanger and painfully wait the next 11 weeks for the next book to be delivered from my library 😅
